In 2009, my family and I moved to Truro.  In trying to find ways to get involved in the community, I noticed an ad in the local newspaper for volunteer firefighters.  When my youngest daughter (then 16) noticed what I was looking at she exclaimed, “You’re going to be a firefighter?  That’s so COOL!” I knew I had to try - it’s not easy getting “cool” points from your teenage daughter :-)

I had to wait until 2010 to start, but I haven’t looked back since.  In the course of the past nearly 11 years of service, I have obtained ProBoard Certification as a Level 1 Firefighter, Hazmat Operations, Level 2 Firefighter, Fire Service Instructor, and am currently working toward Fire Officer Certification.  I have also obtained my class 3 license (driving fire trucks is REALLY cool!), and maintained my Medical First Responder certification.  I have served as the Executive Secretary, Lieutenant, and in 2019 obtained the honour of serving as a Captain.

The Truro Fire Service is an amazing place to learn and grow.  There are so many opportunities to give back to the community and connect with others.  There is always someone available to help you reach your goals.  I strongly believe that you should do something every day that scares you…even if that is just taking that first step!
